People sometimes ask, “What’s the big deal about Gospel Communities?” The Bible makes it clear that we are created for community. We have been created as human beings in such a way that we could never hope to fulfill the design of our creator in isolation. Only in relationship with God and others can we be truly human.
Through Jesus, we have been regenerated for community. We have been called into a new reality. We now have peace and fellowship with God (Romans 5:1-2), and we can have intimate, loving, giving relationships with one another, relationships that truly reflect the power of the gospel to transform fundamentally self-centered people into people who live to love and serve God and others. Indeed, by God’s grace, we have been given new hearts that increasingly desire to reach out in genuine love toward God and neighbor, rather than retreating in selfishness.
As God’s children, we been saved individually by grace, but we have been adopted into his family, and together, comprise the body of Christ. As God’s children, we are many members of one body (1 Cor. 12), making up the household of faith (Gal. 6:10). We are not created to live or function as individuals, but as a community, resulting in a corporate reflection of the bride of Christ. It is by design, then, that our Gospel Communities, are meant to call each of us beyond our individual identity into our corporate identity as part of the bride of Christ.
Biblical community is a powerful witness to the gospel. (John 13:34-35), “It is our crosslove for each other that proclaims the truth of the gospel to a watching and skeptical world. Our love for one another, to the extent that it imitates and conforms to the cross-love of Jesus for us, is evangelistic.” (From Total Church, 54)
